Odysseus's Island
Ithaca, one of the Ionian Islands, is one of the most legendary of the Greek Islands. The home of Odysseus, Ithaca has become a symbol of the journey’s end. Only a small strait of separates Ithaca from the sister island of Kefalonia where the next airport is situated. (Airport code EFL)
It’s more than water however that separates the two islands: Ithaca is a quiet, unspoilt island where small villages and fishing harbours retain old Greek character and the essence of Greek life. There are no big beaches and therefore no resorts or big hotels.
The coastline is dotted with small pebbled coves. Clear turquoise sea hides treasures of fish, shells and occasional pieces of terracotta, worn and encrusted by the sea. This island has everything for those who want to escape package holidays and experience the real Greece.
August is the busiest month and Greek and Italian holiday makers come to the island and it might be difficult to find a room without reservation. Outside of August you might share the taverna just with a handful of other travellers.
Rugged and mountainous at first sight, it is surprisingly green once you are on the island. Everywhere are Cyprus trees, pines, olive groves, wine yards and the evergreen maccia.
Therefore this is not just a place for people adoring the sun, for swimming and snorkelling, but also for walking, hiking and discovering. The best time to do this is early or late in the year. Walk the old donkey paths up to Exhogi, discover witnesses of civilisations long gone, see monasteries, frescos or just sit and enjoy the view from wherever you are. Even though Ithaca is not huge, there is a lot to do and to see.
If you come just for the sun and sea- rent a boat and discover your own cove or try your luck at fishing. The water is clear and swimming and snorkelling is fun. Later in the day unwind in Frikes, an old fishing harbour. Sit and watch as the day fades and the moon rises to hang above the water, illuminating the ruins of the old windmills at the entrance to the harbour. The charm of Ithaca will capture you.
