Ithaca - the jouneys end...
...but how to get there??????
By plane
There are many possibilities
- During the season (about May to October) many charter flights operate from various GB airports to Kefalonia airport (airport code EFL). Most flights start very early, but this way you should manage to get the afternoon boat to Ithaca. This is the fastest way to get there. Please note: Kefalonia is sometimes spelled Cephalonia or Cephallinia. Take a taxi or hired car from here to Sami (about 45 mins) and one of the ferries to Ithaka. In the afternoon ferries will go to Piso Aethos (another 45 mins). There is no village there, so pick up has to be pre-arranged. It’s another 30 mins or so from here to the villa.
- Charter flights to Araxos (GPA) near Patras or Preveza ( PVK) near Lefkas. From both airports you can take taxies to the next harbour (Patras or Nidris) and a boat to Ithaka. Timetables for all Greek ferries can be found here. Athens - charter or not-, find your way to Ithaca from there- either with Olympic airlines to Kefalonia or by bus to Patras ( about 3.5 hours) and by boat to Ithaka (another 4 hours).
- The adventurous minded can also fly (cheaply at times) to Italy. Venice, Ancona and Bari have airports and ferry connections to Patras. Timetables for the Italy Greek ferries are here.
It is worth spending time on the internet to find cheap flights. One good site to do that is here, but there are many others.
By Car
It’s a long way by car, but possible to do if you have time. Find a cheap ferry crossing from England or Scotland to the continent and another one from Italy to Patras. It once took me 17 hours in a van from Calais to Ancona including 3 hours of sleep. Routes through Germany are less expensive but take longer than the “pay as you drive” option through France.
Driving to Venice means a lot less driving through Italy. Ferry prices are hardly more expensive than from further South but the boat trip is much longer.
On Ithaca
There are taxis on Ithaca taking you from Vathi to Lahos. Taxis from Piso Aethos have to be pre- booked as there is no settlement there. We are happy to arrange that for you, please let us know in the booking form.
If you decide to hire a car it might be possible to arrange for a take-over in Piso Aethos, please arrange this with the car hire company.
